Family Run

FarlaVale Gundogs is a family run business with an appreciation for all breeds of gundog. Ryan Kay is one of only seven Kennel Club Accredited Instructors in the UK for Working Dogs, and has been involved with gundogs since a child - brought up working his father’s Labradors and cockers on a small shoot in North Yorkshire. We are now based in village on the outskirts of York.

Giving Every Dog a Chance

We like a challenge, and our last 2 HPR’s have both been ‘rescues’. Our rescue Vizsla Molly became the Top Field Trialling Vizsla in the country (most Points accumulated ) for the 2013-2014 season. For this she was awarded the Janos Field Trial Trophy by the Vizsla Society.

Accredited Instructor in Working Gundogs

We believe in a flexible and creative approach to all our gundogs and also for those dogs that come to us for one to one training. As a KCAI instructor Ryan is able breakdown methods and teach the handler, rather than their dog. Whatever your aspirations with your gundog, Ryan will help you achieve your dogs full potential.

Available at Stud

FTCH Broadmeafarm Charlie is a strong and well-presented medium sized cocker, furnished with handsome looks and a wonderful temperament. Charlie is a tireless hunter with impeccable working lines.

Also at stud is OFTAW FarlaVale Ebor; the grandson of Charlie and the son of the 2019 cocker spaniel championship winner, FTCH Kiltonbeck Rollo. A perfect little cocker with an honest and reliable work ethic and the friendliest character.

One to One Training

We offer one to one training rather than group sessions. Lessons last an hour and take place here onsite at our 10 acre training facility. We believe in starting a dog’s training and guidance from a young age and offer initial puppy lessons from around 13 weeks old. From complete novices to serious triallers, we’re able to offer training and tuition to suit everyone. Our preferred approach is to equip owners with the techniques and skills that will build their confidence as a handler and help shape a partnership with their dogs.

Gundog Correspondent

Ryan has also been a gundog correspondent for ‘Sporting Shooter’ magazine since 2015, contributing in a monthly column with stories from the field. Pictured above is his son Fred, on the cover - also a keen shooter. Sporting Shooter has now amalgamated with Sporting Gun to become one magazine under the latter title. Ryan now writes for Sporting Gun magazine.
