About us

We are Ryan and Alison Kay, owners of Farlavale Gundogs in York

FarlaVale was founded in 2014 and is a family run business. We don’t have anyone else working for us as we want to ensure both the personal touch and the highest possible standards in everything that we do. We are both Royal Kennel Club Accredited Instructors in Working Gundogs; there are only 15 of these Instructors in the UK.

This accreditation attests to our proven specialist knowledge, skills and experience.

A life with gundogs

We’ve both spent our lives around dogs and can be found working our team on shoots across North Yorkshire throughout the season. Our gundogs include Labradors, Cocker Spaniels and a German Shorthaired Pointer, and we enjoy working with all gundog breeds at our training centre, helping owners to understand and harness their dog’s breed chacteristics.

Ryan is a Royal Kennel Club A Panel Field Trial judge for spaniels and a non-panel judge for HPR breeds. He also writes regularly for a range of sporting magazines including Shooting Times and Gundog Journal.

Our Approach to training

With many years’ experience breeding, training, working and competing gundogs, we offer both group and one-to-one training. Our aim is to help owners build a better understanding of their dogs and gain the skills, confidence and knowledge to get the best from them — whether as a pet or working companion.
